A Gallery of Foot Driven Lathes

Anyone who has been reading this blog for any time, knows that I am fascinated by foot driven lathes.  And why not?  They’ll keep you thin, they’ll keep you warm and you won’t have to pay a penny for the electricity to make them go around and around.  What could be better?  And, with that consideration…

I’ve collected these images over the last decade (more or less) from the net.  They are machines that I feel are worth highlighting.  I apologize for any infringement.  If I have infringed, please take it as a compliment.  Believe me, there are plenty of machines on the net that don’t deserve recognition.  Your’s are the best.

At the end of this gallery are several images of  parallel drive wheel lathes, unique to Scandinavia.  I’m hoping that my “Viking” Friends at the University of Gothenburg will be able to tell us more about this design.  It is compact.  It is powerful.  In a future without electricity, it could become extremely important.  In a peaceful future, it could be recognized as an artful example of man’s ingenuity.
